I'm a procurement manager at a 45-person industrial maintenance company. I've managed our tool and MRO spend—about $180,000 a year—for six years. Three things drive every buying decision here: duty cycle, lead time, and total cost. In that order.
This checklist is for people who are about to buy hydraulic equipment for a plant, workshop, or maintenance operation. It's not for a one-time emergency rental. It's not for building a complete tool room in a week. It's for the purchase you can plan, the one where you have time to get it right.
This approach worked for us because we're a mid-size maintenance company with predictable tool needs. If you're a field service operation running out of vans, your calculus will be different.
1. Define the duty cycle before you look at pumps
The first thing I check on an electric Enerpac pump is not max pressure. It's the flow at the rated pressure and the motor's duty cycle. Max pressure sells tools. Duty cycle tells you whether the tool will survive your work.
We run a 10,000 psi electric pump for flange spreading and hydraulic torque wrench work. The pump is under load for maybe 15% of a shift. So an intermittent-duty pump works fine. If someone were running a hydraulic press all day, the same pump would be undersized. The pump that works for us—or rather, the pump that works for our intermittent maintenance work—would not work for a production operation.

People ask for a "flange kit" like it's one product. It's not. A kit for 2-inch ANSI Class 150 flanges will not work on 4-inch Class 300 flanges. The bolt size, bolt spacing, and spreader depth are different.
When I audited our 2023 spending, I found two flange kits in storage that had never been used. I had approved one of them myself. We bought it because the price was good. We opened it, and the maximum spreader depth was too short for the raised-face flanges we work on. We had to buy a second kit. The first one collected dust for a year. (Should mention: the distributor accepted the return, but only for a restocking fee. That fee was my lesson.)
Before you order a flange kit, answer these four questions:
- What flange ratings do we work with most often?
- What bolt sizes and bolt spacings are on those flanges?
- Do we need nut splitters or stud tensioners in the same kit?
- Is the kit expandable, or do we buy a whole new kit if we move up one size?
I'd rather buy a flange kit with less variety and the exact shims we need than a big general-purpose kit with the wrong reach. At least, that's been my experience with flange kits in a chemical plant setting.
3. Add up the total cost of the electric Enerpac pump system
Here's the thing: the pump is the cheap part of the system. The quote might say $4,000 for the pump. Then add hoses, couplers, a valve, a gauge, a carrying case, calibration certificate, and freight. That's another $1,500. Maybe more.
Based on Q3 2024 quotes from three authorized distributors, the base electric Enerpac pump price was only about 60–65% of the final invoice. The rest was the system components. One of those distributors quoted a lower base pump price but the hose was 3 feet shorter and the coupler was a no-name import. The pump was identical; the system was not.
Everything I'd read about buying industrial tools said to get multiple quotes and choose the lower price. In practice, the lower quote often just means the quote is incomplete. Now I compare line by line: pump, hose length, coupler type, gauge, valve, freight, and calibration. The total cost is the number that matters. Comparing the full system cost of two distributors saved us $8,400 a year—about 17% of the MRO tool line.
4. Ignore the 298 piece tool set unless you can justify every piece
Once a quarter, someone forwards a "298 piece tool set" that works out to a dollar per piece. It's tempting. But we use hydraulic torque wrenches, and the sockets we need are impact-rated, six-point, and specifically sized for bolted flanges. A 298 piece set has a lot of chrome sockets that will never leave the drawer.
Before you buy any large set, list the five jobs you'll do in the next month. If the set doesn't cover those jobs, it's just inventory. The real cost of a 298 piece tool set is not the purchase price. It's the drawer space, the tool inventory count, and the time people spend hunting for the one 15 mm deep socket that's missing.
I'm not saying all big kits are bad. I'm saying count pieces after you count jobs, not before.
5. Let lead time win when the shutdown is pending
Had two hours to decide before a Friday night maintenance window. Normally I'd compare three quotes, but there was no time. I went with the electric Enerpac pump because the authorized distributor had service stock and could get repair parts within 24 hours. The cheaper alternative had a six-week lead time for a replacement motor.
The upside was completing the outage on schedule. The risk was spending thousands over the "approved" budget. I kept asking myself: is saving $3,000 worth missing the shutdown window? No.
In hindsight, I should have set up a blanket purchase order with the distributor months earlier. But with a Friday night shutdown, I made the best call with what I had.
6. Ask for warranty, calibration, and compatibility in writing

7. Respect your own boundary
I get asked, "what are the best submersible pump brands?" fairly often. It's outside my lane. The load conditions, motor requirements, and standards are different from hydraulic tools. I don't buy submersibles, so I don't have a qualified opinion.
That's the same reason I push back on hydraulic tool vendors who claim one pump can "do everything." A specialist who says, "This flange spreader is for these conditions—for anything bigger, you need a different tool," earns my trust. The vendor who says, "No problem, it'll work for anything," gets a longer review.
The vendor who said, "This isn't our strength—here's who does it better," earned my business for everything else. The vendor who said, "It'll be fine," cost me a redo.
Common mistakes I've made so you don't have to
Three final reminders. First, don't buy on max pressure alone. The electric Enerpac pump's job is to make a cylinder move at the speed you need. Flow at rated pressure is the spec that controls that.
Second, don't treat the flange kit as a complete solution. It's only complete if it matches the flange sizes, ratings, and bolt patterns in your plant. The label "flange kit" is a starting point, not a guarantee.
Third, one quote is not a price, it's a data point. That doesn't mean you need ten quotes. It means you need two for the same part number, with the same accessories, and then a conversation about lead time and repair support.
As of January 2025, the electric Enerpac pump in our tool crib has paid for itself in uptime. The flange kit has paid for itself in one outage. The 298 piece tool set? It's here. It's organized. And most of it is waiting for the day someone needs a 10 mm ratcheting combination wrench. That day comes, eventually.
Run your own checklist. Check the duty cycle, total cost, warranty, and lead time. And when someone asks you about submersible pumps, you know what to say: not my area.
