How to Choose an Enerpac Foot Pump: A 6-Step Emergency Checklist

If a hydraulic cylinder is lying on a shop floor or wedged under a press, and the Enerpac foot pump that should be holding the load just started losing pressure, the standard procurement process isn't going to help. You need a replacement fast, and you need to pick the right model the first time.

I'm an emergency equipment coordinator at a heavy-industrial maintenance contractor. When I'm triaging a rush order, the question is never which product is best in general. It's which pump will work on this exact cylinder, and can we get it here before the penalty clock starts. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. This is the checklist that got us there.

There are six steps. Treat each one as a gate: if you cannot document the answer, stop and find it.

1. Pull the Cylinder Data Plate, Not the Cylinder Name

A foot pump is selected for a specific cylinder. Without the cylinder model number, maximum pressure, and oil volume required for full stroke, you are guessing. I have watched too many people order a replacement because the old pump looked similar.

Use the official Enerpac catalogue here. Search the cylinder model, not just the pump model. Take a photo of the cylinder nameplate before you leave the job site.

I assumed two same-series cylinders had the same oil volume because both were 50-ton cylinders. Didn't verify. Turned out the long-stroke version needed about 40 cubic inches more to extend fully. The pump would have been wrong before delivery.

2. Compare Pressure Ratings Before Comparing Couplers

The hydraulic pressure rating is non-negotiable. A pump rated 10,000 psi can overpressurize a lower-rated cylinder if no relief valve protects the circuit. A pump rated below the cylinder's requirement will not generate the force you need.

On the Enerpac catalogue spec page, check the maximum working pressure for both the pump and the cylinder. Even if a distributor says a cylinder is compatible, verify the rating yourself.

3. Calculate Oil Volume, Then Compare With the Usable Reservoir

This is the step people skip when the delivery date is tomorrow. You need three numbers:

  • Cylinder oil volume for full stroke
  • Oil volume in hoses and fittings
  • Usable reservoir capacity of the pump

The basic formula is oil volume equals effective piston area times stroke length. Use catalogue data when it is available. It will usually be listed in cubic inches or cubic centimeters.

Do not use the total reservoir capacity if the catalogue shows a separate usable capacity. In hydraulic foot pumps, not every drop in the reservoir is available for extending the cylinder. Some is needed for the suction side.

I don't have hard data on how many wrong foot pump orders come from this mistake. Anecdotally, it is the most common issue I see on rush orders.

4. Verify Threads, Couplers, and Hose Reach Before You Pay

After you confirm pressure and oil volume, look at the connections. Different generations of equipment use different fitting standards. If the old pump has male NPT threads and the replacement has a metric O-ring face, you will lose a day finding an adapter or a new hose.

Before you disconnect anything, follow your lockout/tagout procedure. In the US, that means OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. A foot pump circuit can hold hydraulic energy even when nobody is touching the pedal. Depressurize slowly through the release valve.

Let me rephrase that. Nobody remembers thread standards at 10 pm. Take a photo of the old fitting and send it to the distributor. It is faster than a return.

5. Decide Whether a Foot Pump Is the Right Operator

A foot pump leaves both hands free, which is useful for aligning a flange, holding a component, or working while the load is being positioned. It is also a simpler machine than a powered pump. No battery, no cord, no air supply, fewer failure points.

But if the job requires many rapid cycles, a manual foot pump can slow people down and create fatigue. The Enerpac catalogue also includes pneumatic and electric pump options for high-cycle work. In an emergency, I choose a foot pump when hands-free operation matters and the number of strokes is manageable. If the repair will be followed by repeated lifting all day, I buy or rent a powered pump instead.

6. Verify Real Availability Before Spending Money on Expediting

Online stock is not physical stock. This sounds obvious, but it causes more late arrivals than the shipping itself.

Last spring, a customer's line restart was tied to a substantial penalty if startup did not happen by 6 a.m. The web page said one foot pump was in stock. When I called, it wasn't. A distributor 14 miles away had one. We paid a four-hour delivery fee and made it with about an hour to spare. If we had ordered online without calling, we would have missed the window.

I have mixed feelings about rush fees. On one hand, they feel like a penalty. On the other, a real stock confirmation is worth the money when a shutdown is running.

Two Add-Ons That Are Easy To Overlook

Pump selection is hydraulic work, but installation is often mechanical work. If the foot pump is mounted under a guard or behind a pedestal, a regular socket set won't always reach. Keep a triple square socket set, also called XZN, with the pump kit. It has saved me more than once on European-style fasteners that show up in unexpected places.

I store that socket set in a 16 in tool box cmst16005 that stays near the hydraulic repair gear. It is not a glamorous part of the job, but it keeps the right tools from disappearing into a deep drawer.
